TSDL Paddy Purtil Cup Semi-Final Peake Villa Junior B 2-0 Wilderness Rovers
Scorers: Keiran Hennessy (1) Shane McGuire (1)
Villa entertained Wilderness on a beautiful evening for a game, looking to continue their amazing run of form of late and despite missing a number of regulars through injury and holidays Villa still had a very strong squad in place, ready for battle.
The game started with Villa dominating possession and using the bigger pitch to their advantage. Darragh Byrne down the right ring was having a lot of possession, time after time getting the better of his opponent, who ended up with an early yellow card. Wilderness were trying to use their game plan of long ball but were getting no change from an excellent back line of Kevin Quinn, Cormac Lanigan and Darren Connor. Kieran Hennessey and Kim Dwyer were winning the battles up front. After good work from Kevin Croke and Davie Mahony in midfield they released Kieran Hennessy who spotted the keeper off his line and with a left foot effort scored a screamer from 25 yards out. 1-0 villa. Villa continued to dominate and Eoin Dwyer was winning a lot of headers up front and some great feet from Davy Mahony nearly resulted in another goal but the visitors keeper saved it and also followed up with saves from Kieran Hennessy and Eoin Dwyer. Half time 1-0 Villa.
The second half began with more pressure from Wilderness who had a spell of possession with a number of corners which were well defended by the Villa back line, who stood up and were counted with Kevin Quinn and Cormac Lanigan putting in some excellent blocks. Villa began to get more possession in midfield through Stevie Fewer who began to pick out his team mates with great passes and great work from him and Davy Mahony released Kieran Hennessy through on goal and after rounding last defender was pulled down before he could get his shot off, penalty to villa. Up stepped keeper Shane McGuire who had a quiet afternoon in goals and cooly slotted to the bottom corner to put Villa 2-0 up with half hour to go. Wilderness now pushed on up front and were taking chances at the back as they bombarded the Villa box with long balls but again the Villa defence dealt with everything that came their way, assisted well by the midfield of Stevie Fewer and Kevin Croke to keep the visitors at bay. Villa had a couple of chances on the break and good efforts from Jamie Maher and Damo Grimes were unlucky not to hit the target while the keeper also saved well from Kieran Hennessy when through 1 on 1. Villa saw out the game to the end and now advance to the cup final and await to see who wins the other semi final.
It was an excellent performance again from a great group of players who give evthing week after week and will be gunning to add silver wear to their promotion this season. Villa received great support on the day from The club and supporters and the pitch was in excellent condition, our thanks to the club staff and committee. Special mention to Darren Connor who drive home from a stag up the country to play in the game and also to the couple of youth players who togged out to fill up the squad. Roll on the cup final.
