Munster Junior Cup 4th Round - Peake Villa 0-2 Regional (Limerick)
This game was played in fair conditions with a slight breeze which favoured Regional in the first half. Both teams started quick with a nice bit of the play in the Villa half with the wind in Regional's favour. The first shots in anger came from Villa though, with Aidan McCormack and Mikey Wade making the keeper work in the 4th and 6th minutes. Regional had a great chance to take the lead in the 9th minute from a corner but the ball hit the cross bar. It was mostly half chances for the next 20 minutes or so with both defences on top. Villa were playing good passing football with half time approaching and then against the run of play Regional scored when Willie Tierney in the Villa goal initially made a good save but the ball fell to the feet of a Regional player and he tapped in to make it 0-1 in the 42nd minute. Half Time 0-1.
Regional came out firing at the start of the 2nd half after taking the lead late in the 1st half. They came close to getting a second only for an outstanding save by Willie Tierney in the 54th minute. This spurred on Villa and they started to get on top in the game. In the 60th minute Frank McKevitt played in Pippy Carroll whose shot just went over. It was all the home side now, as Villa were pressing for the equaliser, but that has its risks also which Villa found out in the 67th minute. Regional broke on the counter and were left exposed at the back and Regional scored to make it 0-2. Villa kept playing good soccer and in the 71st minute came close to getting one back from a corner but Sean Wade's effort hit the post. Villa tried hard to get back into the game in the last 20 minutes, but it just wasn't happening for them in front of goal. Alan Ryan got on the end of a great cross from Mikey Wade, but his header back across the square was cleared. Full Time 0-2 to Regional.
We wish Regional the best going forward in the competition. The boy's focus now turns to their FAI Cup 7th Round tie Sunday next at home to Westport.
TSDL Paddy Purtill Cup Quarter Final - Wilderness Rovers FC 0-2 Peake Villa FC (B)
Scorers: Mark Lennon (1) Tommy Brophy (1)
Villa advanced to the semi final of the Paddy Purtil Cup after a super squad performance this morning in Clonmel. After a scrappy opening Villa began to get on top and went close through Adam Garrett and Dale Loughnane but failed to trouble the home keeper. After 20 minutes good play from Stevie Fewer and Evan McCormack in the middle released early substitute Tommy Brophy who after rounding last defender was taken down for a Villa penalty. Mark Lennon dispatched to the net 1-0 Villa. Soon after a long ball clearance from defence nearly caught out stand in keeper Faolan Linnane but he manager to superbly tip it over the bar for a corner before he again pulled off a super save from a shot from edge of box. Half time 1-0.
The second half began with Villa again dominating midfield and Darragh Byrne grew more into the game and was having great joy down the right wing. Another couple of half chances came for Villa from Tommy Brophy and Adam Garrett but the Wilderness keeper pulled off some great saves. Tommy Brophy hit the post after rounding the keeper and Dale Loughnane put the rebound wide. Wilderness pushed forward looking for equalizer but again the Villa defence of Cormac Lanigan, Mark Lennon, Darren Connor and Kevin Croke stood tall, brave and dealt with any trouble that came their way. In the 90th minute after a couple of long balls into Villa box, Villa broke on a counter and a lovely pass from Andrew Halloran released Tommy Brophy who sealed the game cooly slotting past the advancing keeper to make it 2-0 to Villa.
It was a super commanding performance from the whole squad and a 5th clean sheet in a row, which is a great achievement. Villa now advance to cup semi finals and continue the winning run of late. Best on the day were Kevin Croke, Evan McCormack, stand-in keeper Faolan Linnane who was superb throughout, but man of match on the day was Cormac Lanigan.
