TSDL Division 1 League - Tipperary Town 1-1 Peake Villa Junior B
Scorer: Cormac Lanigan
Villa travelled down to Tipperary town for first game of the season looking to make a good start to the league campaign with a strong squad despite missing a number of regulars. Villa started brightly and Richie McCarthy and Adam Garrett were linking up well up front and had a couple of half chances, while at the other end Kevin Croke and Cormac Lanigan were dealing excellently with any threat from the home team. After some good play from Tony Galvin and Stevie Fewer, Stevie played in Richie McCarthy down the wing who’s cross just missed Adam Garrett but fell to Jack Ryan Casey but his effort went over the bar from a good position. Villa were on top in the middle of the field and a couple of excellent corners from Mark Lennon were not taken advantage of by Villa, despite Cormac Lanigan going close. The game was stop/ start now as the home team suffered a couple of injuries to players and had to be substituted while a break away attack from the home team almost lead to a goal but for an excellent save from Shane McGuire in the Villa goal. Half time 0-0.
Villa totally controlled the second half from kick off as the home team were under pressure after having made a number of changes due in injury in first half and Villa pushed on looking for the winner. A few half chances fell to Richie McCarthy, Jack Ryan Casey and Andrew Halloran but Villa failed to turn their possession into a goal. With 12 minutes left after a number of corners into the home teams box Villa eventually got a deserved goal after a corner wasn’t cleared, the ball fell to Cormac Lanigan who put Villa 1-0. Villa had a number of penalty calls turned down as they continued to dominate and were getting a little frustrated. After a rare attack from the home team who were under pressure they were awarded a corner which Villa failed to deal with and the home team struck for the equalizer. Villa pushed on looking for the winner but time ran out and Villa will feel a little hard done by just picking up the 1 point, however it was a very positive start to the season and a very strong performance from all the squad. Best for Villa on the day were Shane McGuire, Kevin Croke Stevie Fewer, Richie McCarthy and man of the match Cormac Lanigan.
