Division 1 Shield Semi-Final
Wilderness Rovers 1 - 2 Peake Villa Junior B
Scorers: Conor Murphy (1) Scott Brennan (1)
Villa travelled down to Clonmel facing a tough challenge against a strong home team. The home side are top of Division One and still in all competitions going into today's game but Villa's mixture of youth and experience were up for the battle from the first whistle. Villa took the lead after just five minutes when a well pre planned corner from Mark Lennon into Adam Garrett who stepped over the ball to allow Robbie Stapleton a shot at goal which was blocked but the rebound was finished well to the net by Conor Murphy. 0-1. The home team were using their physical advantage with a lot of long balls into the Villa defence but Cormac Lanigan and Sean Condron were up to the challenge winning numerous headers to keep the home team out. The home team did equalise on the half hour mark after some presure on the Villa defence when a blocked clearance went to the corner of the net past Shane McGuire who could do nothing about it. 1-1. Robbie stapleton who was keeping the defence busy with his clever runs had a great chance when breaking through the defensive line but his shot went over. Half time 1-1.
In the second half Villa dropped a little deeper but the hard working Keelan Graham and Kevin Croke in midfield were doing evthing to take pressure off their defence. The home side pushed for a winner and had a number of corners which were defended bravely by Foggy Fogarty and Aidan Butler and Villa needed keeper Shane Mcguire in top form as he pulled of some top drawer saves to keep it at 1-1. With just three minutes to play and after alot of pressure from the home team Villa broke up the field to Jack Kelly who held the ball up well and fed it to Scott Brennan who took his man on out on the wing cut in and beat the keeper at his near post with a great finish. The last few minutes saw the home team having a couple of corners trying to get the equalizer but Villa held on to progress to the Shield final. The boys now have two finals to look forward to in the next two to three weeks having already reached the Paddy Purtill Cup Final.
Next up for the boy's is the Tipperary Cup Quarter Final at home to Premier side Cahir Park FC next Sunday. It was a brave and gutsy performance from Villa in particular the younger players in the squad against a very strong and physical home side. On the day the whole team performed to their highest level and deserved the victory in particular Sean Condron and Cormac Lanigan in defence, the ever hard working Keelan Graham in midfield and Robbie Stapleton up front was a constant threat but man of the match was Shane McGuire with some excellent saves throughout the game. Full Time 1-2.
