Tipperary Cup Semi-Final
St. Michaels A 0-0 Peake Villa Junior B
AET St. Michaels A 1-0 Peake Villa Junior B
Villa faced the daunting task of travelling to Cooke Park on Friday evening to face the Premier league champions and Munster Junior Cup finalist. The home side started as expected on the front foot and applied early pressure to the visitors defence but Villa were well organised in defence with both full backs Alex Maloney and Mark Lennon blocking a number of attempted crosses by the home sides wingers.
Anything that did come in to the six yard box was dealt with impressively by young Villa shot stopper Josh Coady who would put in a man of the match performance in the second half. Adam Garrett had the tough task of playing up front on his own but his tireless working was impressive and he broke up a number of attempts by home side to start attacks from defence. Conor Murphy came into the game a little more and after a Villa counter attack from a home sides corner he went close after a great run down the left wing.
The home side had a number of corners but the Villa central defence of Aidan Butler Foggy Fogarty and Cormac Lanigan were impressive in keeping them at bay and captain Kevin Croke and Keelan Graham were putting in a huge shift in front of them breaking up many attacks on the edge of Villa box. Michael Anthony Mccarthy was impressive on the right wing and his workrate in helping out Alex Moloney was frustrating the home side as they continued to block crosses into the villa box. Half time 0-0.
The home side made a couple of changes early in second half as they pushed to try and break down the Villa defence but again the defence in particular Aidan Butler and Cormac Lanigan were putting their bodies on the line to block shots from outside the box as the home side got a little frustrated. Villa keeper Josh Coady then came into his own as he made a couple of brilliant saves to keep the home side out as they pushed hard and try make their possession count but Villa hadn't read the script and with just ten minutes to go a break from defence found Keelan Graham and he released the now thorn in the home sides defence Conor Murphy and his run found himself in on goal but the home keeper saved his effort much to the agony of the huge traveling support for Villa who were very vocal throughout the game as a huge cup shock was looking on the cards. For the last 10 minutes the home side really pushed to get the winner but again the Villa defence would not be broken and both youth players, substitute Niall Dunne and Michael Anthony McCarthy continued to frustrate some of the home sides star players as they pushed hard and it was back to the walls defending from Villa As game headed into injury time the home side were having a lot of shots blocked but then the ones that weren't found Josh Coady in inspired form in the Villa goal and he made an unbelievable save down to his right corner much to the excitement of the travelling away support. Full time 0-0.
Extra Time:
The home side made a couple of more changes to try push hard for the winner and Villa lost the impressive Kevin Croke to injury as the huge effort Villa had put in was starting to take its toll and he was replaced by another youth Josh Connolly and just two minutes before half time in extra time the home side got the all important goal as the Villa defence was finnally breached when David Slattery was found with a great pass and from five yards out there was nothing young Coady could do about this one. In the second period Villa had to go for an equalizer and pushed Foggy Fogarty up front along with introducing Jack Kelly from the bench for the hard working Keelan Graham. Villa had a couple of corners and free kicks into the box at the death but it wasn't to be as the home side saw out the win and progress to the Tipp Cup Final.
Villa finished the game with 6 youths players on the pitch which bodes well for the clubs future. It was an inspired and brave effort from the whole Villa squad on the night as they gave the home side a real scare and fought right to the last second of the game and done themselves their supporters and the club proud on the night. Every single player gave 100% and had the game of their lives with standout performances from Keelan Graham, Alex Moloney, Kevin Croke, Conor Murphy and man of the match Josh Coady. Villa now look forward to the upcoming Paddy Purtill Cup and the Shield finals.
