Peake Villa Fc of the Tipperary Southern & District League advanced to the quarter finals of the FAI Junior Cup after a hard fought win over Crumlin Utd.
United had eliminated cross Town Rivals Thurles Town in the previous round and this made it an even sweeter win for Villa. Both sides started in cagey fashion but Matthew McKevitt found himself through on goal on the sixth minute but was taken down on the edge of the area and the referee handed out the first booking of the day when in reality it might have been red. Pippy Carroll took the resulting free kick and it narrowly missed the target. Villa continued to press and Maris Baltins won the ball in midfield and his inch perfect ball down the right found McKevitt and he in turn floated the ball into the box and Dale Loughnane was on hand to head the ball over.
Peake were the strongest at this point but Crumlin suddenly found their feet and forced Keeper Stephen Ryan into three fine catches in a matter of minutes. United then had the biggest chance of the half so far when a free kick bobbled through the Villa defence and the Crumlin striker hit the ball wide when he should have done better.
The Dublin side took the lead ten minutes from half time when a corner was cleared back out to the taker and this time his cross evaded everyone except Ronan Hanaphy’s shoulder and the ball looped past the stranded Ryan in the goal. The game went into half time at 1-0 and Villa would perhaps of felt hard done by.
Villa came out for the second have with a purpose and five minutes in Carroll found space in the middle and he found McKevitt with an exquisite pass and the young striker rolled the ball past the keeper with consummate ease to lever proceedings. The game once again became cagey and it would be five more minutes before the next chance when the Crumlin left back let fly from distance and his shot narrowly missed the target. Crumlin did however retake the lead two minutes later when Baltins got caught out with a long ball and Hanaphy ran through and finished the ball brilliantly past Ryan to put his side back in front.
Villa piled on the pressure thereafter and chances from Pippy Carroll and Mikey Wade went by without really threatening the keeper. The game would change in the sixty fourth minute when the United Number 8 was sent off for a lunge on Baltins. Crumlin should have put the game to bed twelve minutes from time but Number 10 blazed wide when in loads of space in the area. Villa continued to press and a mazy run from Dale Loughnane two minutes later end with a shot from an angle only to see the ball crash off the side netting. A corner two minutes later seen Alan Leahy head over as it looked increasingly like it wouldn’t be Villa’s day.
That would change with four minutes remaining when a cross from the left beat everyone and Mikey Wades late run into the box resulted with him smashing the ball past the helpless keeper to level affairs again to the joyous roar from the home fans and the game headed for extra time.
It only took a minute for Villa to take the lead in extra time when a Gary Lyons free kick was headed home by McKevitt for his second of the game and it now seemed like a mountain too high for the Dublin side. Villa managed the game well after this and should have doubled their advantage when Ronan McGuire made space down the right and his low cross cannoned off Kevin Croke but luckily for Crumlin straight into the keepers hands. United had a second player sent off in the dying moments when when Number 9 was giving his marching orders for a late tackle on Ryan.
A fantastic win for Peake Villa, a young side with huge promise and very deserved of the win.
Man of the Match on the day was hard to pick with Number 6 and 10 playing very well for Crumlin, Whilst Alan Leahy, Gary Lyons and Dale Loughnane were outstanding for Villa. Bit the stoppagetime.ie Man Of The Match award goes to Matthew McKevitt, a fantastic display from the line striker who looked dangerous every time he got on the ball, this will rewarded with two goals and quarter final qualification in this season FAI Junior Cup.
